South Africa is outstanding. The people are cool, the wine is good, the coastline is one of the greatest we've seen. After so many weeks of consistant buses in developing countries, our time there was a breath of fresh air. We rented a car and drove a portion of the coast from Port Elizabeth, through inland wine country into Cape Town. Our storied from S. Africa are bound to be less exotic...and we were happy for it. We had our run with the crazy overnight legs and all night mosquito hunts. South Africa became the light at the end of the tunnel for us.
We made the transition quickly as you will see in the pictures below. It took no time to search out quality campgrounds and hostels that were safe and full of comforts we had looked for to. A winery is never too far away...or maybe we just made sure we were never far from a winery. We decided that S. African wineries are among our favorites, mainly because they are all built among the mountains. This was certainly one of the highlights of the trip for us as we were able to raise a glass of wine at the southern tip of the continent, having started far above the equator in Ethiopia and getting there solely by public transporton. Many of the camping grounds had huge kitchens...so we went off. We hadn't eaten so well for months. Below are a few shots of South Africa...
